MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - New Census estimates show Alabama's population rose slightly -- by 0.8 percent -- in a year's time.
The jump from July 2007 to July 2008 made Alabama the 27th state in terms of population growth.
The population estimates show Utah was the fastest growing state, increasing by 2.5 percent over a year.
Utah knocked Nevada from the top spot. Michigan and Rhode Island were the only states that lost population.
Alabama's population increased from 4.62 million people in July 2007 to 4.66 million in July 2008 -- an increase of more than 35,000 people.
Alabama ranked 23rd in terms of population overall.
California remained the most populous state, followed by Texas, New York, Florida and Illinois.
