Ala.'s jobless rate climbs in Oct. to 5.6 percent

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama's unemployment rate climbed in October to 5.6 percent. That's the highest rate in nearly five years.

Industrial Relations Director Tom Surtees said Friday the state last recorded a 5.6 percent rate in November 2003.

The state's jobless rate was up from 5.3 percent in September.

The national unemployment rate also rose in October to 6.5 percent. Alabama counties with the lowest unemployment rates were Shelby at 3.6 percent, Madison at 3.8 percent, and Tuscaloosa at 4.1 percent.

Counties with the highest jobless figures were Chambers at 14.3 percent, Wilcox at 12.8 percent and Bullock with 12 percent.
