ANNISTON, Ala. (AP) - An Anniston woman has been convicted of stealing worker's compensation checks.
Alabama Attorney General Troy King said Tuesday 59-year-old Charlene Trapp Smith pleaded guilty to first-degree theft.
King said Smith misrepresented to an insurance provider that her disabled husband was still alive and accepted his checks for five years after his death.
A Calhoun County judge sentenced Smith to serve 3 years in prison and ordered her to pay $21,000 in restitution.
King said Smith will apply for probation in January.
