Sessions, Figures on same stage on election eve

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Republican U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions virtually ignored his Democratic opponent, state Sen. Vivian Davis Figures, in his re-election campaign.

But he couldn't ignore her Monday when they appeared on the same stage at a cancer institute dedication.

Figures said she attended the University of South Alabama event as a legislator. But she said she asked for votes in conversations with people at the ceremony that included Gov. Bob Riley.

With a lead in the polls, Sessions has refused Figures' invitation to debate. Sessions had no comment on sharing the stage with Figures.

Figures described the encounter as "very cordial." Sessions plans to greet supporters tonight at the Renaissance Riverview Plaza Hotel.

Figures said she has baked cakes to serve to her supporters tonight at the Gulf Coast Christian Center in west Mobile.
