Two-year colleges reimbursed for housing hurricane evacuees

The Alabama Emergency Managment Agency transferred an initial payment of $714,000 to the Department of Postsecondary Education on Wednesday, October 8.

This funding is for expenses some two-year colleges incurred while housing more than 8,300 evacuees from Louisiana.

Community colleges billed the Federal Emergency Management Agency for expenses.

AEMA received the funds from FEMA and transmitted them to the Department of Postsecondary Education.

"The Alabama Emergency Management Agency would like to thank everyone involved in the swift assessment and processing of funds in this initial phase, " said Director Brock Long. "We will continue to work to see that all eligible costs are reimbursed."

Payment could not be processed until after October 1 due to state policy governing how transactions are handled at the end of the fiscal year.
