Lawsuit seeks to allow inmates to register to vote

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A national civil rights group has filed a lawsuit challenging the Alabama prison commissioner's decision to stop a voter registration drive for inmates.

The NAACP Legal Defense Fund filed the lawsuit Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Montgomery.

The suit asks the court to order Alabama Prisons Commissioner Richard Allen to allow a Dothan minister, Rev. Kenneth Glasgow, to continue a drive to register some Alabama prison inmates.

Alabama law allows inmates who have not been convicted of crimes involving moral turpitude to vote.

Allen stopped the voter registration drive on Sept. 18 after receiving a complaint from Republican Party chairman Mike Hubbard.

Legal Defense Fund President John Payton says stopping the voter registration drive deprived eligible voters of their rights.

Prisons spokesman Brian Corbett did not immediately return calls seeking comment Tuesday.
