Fatal plane crash in Limestone County is under investigation

Updated:

Two men are dead after a plane crashed in the Tennessee River.

It happened near Harris Station Road and Lucas Ferry Road in the Tanner Community.

NTSB is on the way from Birmingham on Wednesday night.

When they get here they'll piece together the clues to determine what caused this plane to crash.

Sheriff Mike Blakely with the Limestone County Sheriff's Office said, "about 11:30 this morning we received a call that a plane had apparently gone down here at Beulah Bay."

First on the scene was the Athens/Limestone Rescue Squad.

Chris Crable of the Athens/Limestone County Rescue said "me and another one of my rescue members we jumped in the water and figured there were two victims inside the cab still. And we realize there was nothing we could do at that time so we just stood by and waited for the sheriff to come and waited for the coroner to come."

The bodies were then removed from the wreckage.

"Got the seats out, got the seat belts undone and pulled one victim out at a time," said Crable.

This was not an easy feat, because the plane was upside down and the cables were tangled around the victims feet.

The plane is registered at Pryor Field.

Sheriff Blakely said, "one of the individuals was a local person and the other, according to the drivers license was from out of state."

WAFF has  learned the plane is a Colyaer Freedom.

Those plans are manufactured in North Alabama and are considered light sport planes.

"We know both people are pilots.  And we're not sure at this time if one of them was trying the plane out to see if he would buy it, or to see if he could get certified in this particular plane"  Sheriff Blakely stated.

The plane was secured in about 5 feet of water and is awaiting further examination.

The names of the victims have not been released.  Investigators are working to notify their families.
