(KODAK, Tenn) - Doug Deeds hit a 2-out, 2-run home run in the bottom of the 9th off Juan Sandoval, lifting the Tennessee Smokies to a come-from-behind 6-5 win over the Huntsville Stars, Wednesday evening at Smokies Park.
The win was the Smokies' 2nd in a four-game series before the Stars return home for a holiday series against the Birmingham Barons.
It's the 4th time this season the Stars have lost in their opponent's final at-bat.
For Sandoval, who finished June with 4 saves and a 0.55 ERA and entered the game with a streak of 13 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings, it was his 4th blown save of the season.
Sandoval retired Matt Camp on a grounder to Mike Bell and Tyler Colvin on a line out to first before Matt Craig singled to left and was lifted for a pinch-runner. Deeds took a first pitch strike before he launched a long, high home run onto the grassy berm area in right field for his 7th home run of the season and his 4th hit of the night.
The Stars had an early 4-1 lead after two innings. Angel Salome singled in Freddy Parejo with two out in the 1st. Then after Chris Errecart led off the 2nd with his 13th home run of the season, Mat Gamel doubled in two runs after Freddy Parejo and Alcides Escobar singled with two out.
The Smokies fought back to tie the game in the 6th inning.
Camp tripled in Sam Fuld with one out in the 5th and Colvin drove him in with a sacrifice fly to bring Tennessee within a run, 4-3. In the 6th, Camp doubled in Mark Reed to tie the game, 4-4.
The Stars took back the lead in the 7th after Escobar led the inning off with an infield single. Escobar then moved to 2nd on Salome's grounder and scored on Matt LaPorta's two-out single to left.
Starter Donovan Hand left the game after five innings with a 4-3 lead, but could not get his first Double-A win. Steve Bray pitched two innings, allowing Tennessee to tie the game, then David Johnson pitched one scoreless inning.
Johnson has thrown 7 scoreless innings in relief over 6 appearances since June.
Matt Avery pitched three innings in relief of starter Donnie Veal, allowing one run on 2 hits before Rocky Roquet (3-1) came on in the 9th for the victory. Sandoval is 1-3 for the Stars.
The series wraps up Thursday night with right-hander Nic Ungs making his 2nd start in a Stars uniform against Smokies' right-hander Alex Maestri, making his 2nd start this season for Tennessee.
