OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - It will be a true dogfight for the national baseball championship as Fresno State's improbable postseason run will end with the west coast Bulldogs playing the Georgia Bulldogs for the title in Omaha starting today.
Tommy Mendonca went 3-for-5 and drove in 4 runs and Clayton Allison came back from a shoulder ailment to allow one run over 6 innings as Fresno State defeated North Carolina, 6-1, to win their bracket, Sunday night.
Fresno State was seeded 4th in the Long Beach Regional when the NCAA Tournament began.
Allison, who was the WAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year, had just one win when the WAC Tournament began in late May, but he moved his record to 4-5 on the season by allowing just 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out 6.
Fresno State first got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd with a two-spot and never fell behind. After a single by Erik Wetzel and a double by Steve Susdorff put runners on second and third with one out, North Carolina elected to intentionally walk Alan Ahmady. Ahmady was picked off by Tar Heel catcher Tim Federowicz but Mendonca delivered a two-out single into left field to drive in Wetzel and Susdorff for the lead.
After back-to-back hits to lead off the top of the 4th, North Carolina cut into the lead with a pair of one-out walks to make the score 2-1.
The Bulldogs answered again in the bottom of the inning. Jordan Ribera got a one-out single and moved to third on a throwing error by UNC reliever Brian Moran on a failed pick-off attempt. Danny Muno then drove in Ribera with a single into right field.
Fresno State made it 4-1 in the 5th when Ahmady drew a leadoff walk and scored on Mendonca's double into left field and two more runs in the 6th.
