Stars Beat West Tenn, 7-5, for First Win of Second Half

(HUNTSVILLE) - Alcides Escobar and Angel Salome led a 13-hit attack with three hits apiece as the Huntsville Stars rebounded from their playoff loss to West Tennessee with a 7-5 win over the Diamond Jaxx for their first win of the season's second half.

The Stars and Diamond Jaxx are both 1-1, a game behind the 2-0 Carolina Mudcats, where the Stars travel next week after the conclusion of this six-game series.

Mike Wilson's RBI double in the 1st inning and Jon Nelson's 1st home run of the season gave the D'Jaxx an early 2-0 jump on Derek Miller. Nelson's homer was the first off Miller since May 6 against Mobile.

The Stars tied it up in the 4th when Salome led off with a single and moved to second when Freddy Parejo drew just his 3rd walk of the season in 147 at-bats. After a double steal, Mike Bell ended an 0-for-20 slump with a clutch two-out single to right, scoring both runners.

Nelson's 2-run home run in the 5th put the Diamond Jaxx back on top, 4-2, but the Stars took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning when they scored three runs on four straight singles by Escobar, Mat Gamel, Salome, and Parejo.

Salome and Cole Gillespie doubled in runs in the 7th to push the lead to 7-4 before Luis Valbuena's home run in the 8th finalized the scoring.

West Tenn starter Doug Fister (5-6) was charged with all 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits. He is winless since May 21 and 1-2 in three starts against the Stars.

Miller (6-2) went 6 innings for the win and allowed 4 runs on 8 hits, walking 4 and striking out 3. Omar Aguilar picked up his 3rd save.

In his first start of the season, Michael Garciaparra, playing 3rd base while Gamel DHed, went 1-for-4.

Thursday night, David Welch will try for his 9th win as he faces southpaw Justin Thomas (5-5, 4.32).
