MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) - Middle Tennessee State pitcher Jordan Alvis has signed with the Seattle Mariners and will start his professional career with the team's Pulaski affiliate in the Appalachian League.
Alvis was selected in the 21st round of last week's Major League Baseball's draft.
Under the contract he signed with the Mariners, the team agreed to pay for Alvis to finish school when he's done playing baseball. He is a junior at MTSU.
During the 2008 season, Alvis, who transferred from Birmingham Southern College, posted a 6-2 record ans struck out 25 in 48 1/3 innings of work. Alvis made 18 appearances with 7 starts.
Batters hit .330 against him as he posted an 8.75 ERA. The team holds his playing rights for six years.
