(HUNTSVILLE) - Huntsville Stars 3rd baseman Mat Gamel has been honored as the Southern League's Player-of-the-Week for the 2nd time this season.
Gamel hit safely in each of the Stars' six games, extending his on-base streak to 46 consecutive games dating back to April 13, and his hitting streak to 12 games.
He homered in three consecutive games during the week, including a 4-hit performance against Mobile, while striking out only twice.
Gamel also won the award for the week of April 21-27.
Gamel leads the league with a .382 batting average, hits (89), doubles (18), extra-base hits (36), runs scored (54), and is tied for the RBI lead with his teammate, Matt LaPorta (49). His average is 4th-best in all of minor league baseball.
The Stars (35-23) are currently on the road in Chattanooga and return home to play the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx for a five-game series starting Thursday. The Stars have a one-game lead on the Diamond Jaxx in the Northern Division.
