(HUNTSVILLE) - Rusty Ryal hit a 3-run home run and Cyle Hankerd highlighted a 7-run 9th with a grand slam to power the Mobile Bay Bears to a 12-2 win over the Huntsville Stars, Thursday night at Joe Davis Stadium.
The Bay Bears put an end to the Stars' 9-game win streak at the Joe, one short of tying the club record. The Stars drop to 23-11 in the first half, but maintain their one-game lead over the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx. The Diamond Jaxx blew a 5-run lead in losing again to the Mississippi Braves last night at Pringles Park.
Ryal's home run off Brae Wright (1-4), his 3rd of the series, gave Matt Torra a 3-0 lead to work with before taking the mound in the bottom of the 1st. Torra came into the ballgame 5th among Southern League ERA leaders.
Chris Errecart' hit a leadoff homer in the 4th to put the Stars on the scoreboard, but Mobile came back in the 5th and 6th innings. Torra helped himself with an RBI double in the 5th and Hankard, with 5 RBIs on the night, pushed Mobile's lead to 5-1 with an RBI double in the 6th.
Wright took the loss after allowing 5 runs on 7 hits over 5 1/3 innings. He has lost four straight after winning 1-0 in his AA debut on April 6.
Mat Gamel, 3rd among Southern League batting leaders with a .368 average, finished with two hits, including a 7th inning homer, his 6th, that cut the lead to 5-2 in the 7th inning.
Robert Hinton threw two scoreless innings before David Johnson took over in the 9th and gave up all seven runs that inning.
The 12 runs yielded by the Stars were the most they have allowed in any game this season.
The series wraps up Friday night with the league's only 5-game winner, lefty Sam Narron taking the mound against BayBears' right-hander Adam Howard (3-1).
