(MARYVALE, Ariz) - Sam Narron tossed three scoreless innings and Matt LaPorta, Milwaukee's #1 draft pick last year, delivered two sacrifice flies to push the Stars past the Tennessee Smokies 3-1 Tuesday in Arizona.
The Stars improve to 2-2 in spring training and face the San Antonio Missions, the AA affiliate of the San Diego Padres, Wednesday afternoon.
Ned Yost, the son of the Brewers manager, had 3 hits, while Michael Brantley and Chuckie Caufield each singled and scored.
Narron, who went 7-9 for the Stars last season, gave up two hits and struck out a pair before giving way to Joe Bateman, a San Francisco farmhand who pitched last year for the Double-A Connecticut (East.) Defenders.
Bateman fanned 4 in his two scoreless innings and was followed by Patrick Ryan, who worked two shutout innings. Ryan was promoted to the Stars for the Southern League Championship series after spending the regular season at high class-A Brevard County in the Florida State League.
