(HUNTSVILLE) - The UAH Chargers finished off a two-game series at Joe Davis Stadium, Wednesday afternoon, with a repeat victory over nationally-ranked Delta State, using another 9th inning, 2-out rally to produce another 6-5 victory.
Just like Tuesday night's 6-5 win by the Chargers, the Statesmen jumped off to a 4-0 lead, pushing their runs across in the 2nd inning off Patrick Grimes.
The Chargers did not let that lead last long, answering back with four of their own in the bottom half.
Joey Haston issued a pair of two-out walks before 2nd baseman Jake Lee scored Shannon Anderson from 2nd. Luke Putnam then ripped a double to left, driving in two to make it 4-3. Third baseman Jordan Parker finished the two-out rally with his 3rd triple of the season to bring in Putnam and tie the game.
The Chargers took the lead in the following inning on a single by Kevin Herring, a sacrifice, and a single to center by shortstop Will Nichols.
Delta State tied it, 5-5 in the 5th on a sac fly and things remained that way until the bottom of the 9th.
With a pitching change, right fielder Blake Butler led off the inning by ripping a single to centerfield off Korey Cunningham, after having been intentionally walked in his two previous at bats. A single by Herring moved Butler to 3rd putting runners on the corners, setting the stage for Nick Huckaby.
But needing just a sac fly to win the game, Huckaby lined into a double play that doubled off Herring.
The momentum didn't stay with the Statesmen too long. Nichols singled to left on a 3-1 pitch bringing in Butler with the winning run.
Nichols drove in two runs on the afternoon to increase his team lead to 23. Luke Putnam finished 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs.
Jacob Wray (2-1) picked up the win in relief, going 1 2/3 innings. Starter Grimes gave up 5 runs on 10 hits and threw 115 pitches in his 7 innings of work. Cunningham goes to 2-1 for Delta State.
The Chargers continue their home series this afternoon against West Alabama.
