(HUNTSVILLE) - Clutch hitting by Shannon Anderson and a bases-loaded bunt single by Kevin Herring in the bottom of the 9th gave the UAH Chargers a 6-5 upset victory over 6th-ranked Delta State on a cool Tuesday night at Joe Davis Stadium.
The Chargers (11-14), down 4-0 early in the game, scored a run apiece in the final three innings to snatch a 4-3 lead away from the Statesmen.
With runners on first and second, a 2-out RBI single down the left field line by Jordan Parker, who went 4-for-5, scored catcher Joey Tatara to tie the game, 4-4, in the bottom of the 7th.
The Chargers went ahead 5-4 in the 8th on Anderson' 2-out double.
Delta State (16-5) tied the game in the 9th on a home run over the left field wall by Ricky Noland, who went 3-for-4, setting up the Chargers' dramatic 9th inning comeback.
A bloop single to right by 2nd baseman Jacob Lee to leadoff the 9th put the potential game-winner aboard. A perfect push bunt down the first base line moved Lee and extra base to third. Jordan Parker then loaded the bases with none out on another bunt single.
The Statesmen went to their bullpen for Levi Bishop, who did the job he was sent out to do by striking out Blake Butler, but Herring came through on an 0-1 pitch and hit a ball to deep short that brought in Lee to win the ballgame.
Joe Dunlap (4-1) picked up the win by going the final 5 1/3 innings in relief of southpaw starter Indjomar Juliana. Dunlap struck out 4 and walked none in his best effort yet as a Charger.
Nathan Hardy (0-1) took the loss in relief for Delta State (16-5).
The Chargers and Statesmen battle again on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the "Joe".
