(MESA, Ariz.) - Gabe Gross hit a tie-breaking home run with one out in the 10th inning and former Huntsville Star Tony Gwynn tripled, homered and drove in two runs as the Milwaukee Brewers scored four times in the 10th to beat the Chicago Cubs, 10-4, Tuesday in Cactus League action.
Gwynn, who has not hit a homer in 200 Major League at-bats, hit a 2-run blast in the 4th to tie the gam, 3-3. Mike Cameron then led off the 5th with his first spring home run to put Milwaukee ahead.
Gabe Kapler, trying to catch on with the Brewers coming out of a brief retirement, drove in 3 runs on a pair of singles.
Former Huntsville pitcher Steve Bray picked up the win in relief. Claudio Vargas gave up 3 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks over 3 innings in his second spring start.
Ryan Dempster, trying to win a spot in the rotation after spending three seasons as the Cubs' closer, gave up a run on 2 hits and 2 walks over 3 innings in his second spring start.
Kerry Wood, one of the candidates for the closer job, had a 1-2-3 sixth.
The Brewers face the Texas Rangers, Wednesday. Manny Parra is slated to pitch for the Brewers with Prince Fielder expected to be in the lineup.
