Madison Academy Wins 3rd Straight Boys Title

(BIRMINGHAM) - Kerron Johnson had 15 points and 5 assists and 7-footer Bawa Muniru added 14 points and 11 rebounds to help the top-ranked Madison Academy Mustangs win their 3rd straight 3A Boys Championship, by beating Clarke County, 48-42, Thursday in Birmingham.

Johnson was named 3A MVP in the tournament.

Clarke County forced 11 turnovers in the 1st half, fueling its offense to a 26-22 lead at halftime. but Madison Academy jumped out in front 32-31 on a driving bucket by Johnson with 3:17 left in the 3rd. They never trailed after that.

The 4th ranked Bulldogs (27-6) were led by Mike Taite, who had 19 points, among them, 4 three-pointers. Justin Burroughs added 11, but the pair combined for just 10 points in the 2nd half.

The Bulldogs got as close as 43-42 after a putback by Ronnie Osborne with 1:44 left, but Osborne missed a foul shot that might have tied the game.

Johnson, Donte Bowman and Charles Brown hit free throws in the final seconds to seal the victory for the Mustangs.

Johnson and Muniru were placed on the Class 3A Boys All-Tourney Team, joined by Taite, Burroughs, Robert Barnes of Winfield. and David Murray of Leeds.
