(BIRMINGHAM) - The 7th-ranked Geneva Lady Panthers upset #3 Lauderdale County, 54-52, in the 3A girls semifinal in Birmingham, Tuesday.
Despite cold shooting in the 1st half, Geneva (26-5) took control of the game to bring a 22-16 lead into the locker room, then held on successfully for the win.
Both teams shot less than 30% in the first half, but came out on their game in the 2nd.
Both teams stayed within a point or two of each other in the 4th quarter. Losing a one-point lead with 2:30 left, the Tigers trailed by just four points with :08 to play. They had a chance to send it to overtime when Lauderdale County's Kiara Young scored on a layup to make it 54-52, and then was fouled when she stole the inbounds pass with less than a second to play.
She missed the first free throw and intentionally missed the second. However, the strategy backfired when the Tigers (30-8) were called for a lane violation, giving final possession to Geneva.
Geneva will play Crossville for the 3A Girls Championship, Thursday at 6 pm.
