(BIRMINGHAM) - The Madison Academy Mustangs took advantage of Leeds' cold 1st half shooting and a 20-5 run in the 1st quarter to upset the Green Wave in the 3A Boys semi-finals in Birmingham, Wednesday.
Leeds shot just 26.5% in the 1st half while Kerron Johnson scored 5 of his 24 points and Donte Bowman scored 6 to get the Mustangs off to their good start. It proved to be key to their victory.
Leeds put on a 4th quarter charge, narrowing Madison Academy's lead to six after David Murray hit a three-pointer with :33 left in the game, but that's as close as they would get, as the Mustangs closed the game on a 5-0 run to win.
Seven-foot Bawa Muniru scored 11 points and grabbed 8 rebounds for Madison Academy. David Murray led 3rd-ranked Leeds (30-5) with 18 points, while Laddarius Frazier and Willie Kimball added 11 each.
The Mustangs will play the Clarke County Bulldogs for the championship, Thursday evening. Clarke County put an end to Winfield's season with a 63-50 victory behind Mike Taite, who scored 22 points and brought down 8 rebounds.
Madison Academy (24-8) advances to the finals for the 3rd straight year.
