(JACKSONVILLE) - The Johnson Jags' 23-11 season and state playoff trail ended Wednesday with a buzzer-beater at the 5A Northeast Playoffs in Jacksonville.
A three-pointer by Josh English with no time remaining handed Anniston a 56-53 victory over the Jags.
The final basket was the coda to a thrilling 17.9 seconds in which fans saw two lead changes and seven points scored.
Both teams battled back-and-forth in the 4th quarter, exchanging leads. Johnson led by as many as six points, 49-43, with 5:48 left before the Bulldogs went on an 8-2 run, tying the game with 3:32 left.
For nearly three minutes, neither team was able to score. Cameron Logan then turned the ball over to Anniston after a missed shot from the line by English and Quintariu Henderson scored on a layup to give Anniston a 53-51 lead with :18 left.
Logan tied it back up on a jumper with :08 left before English heaved a 45-foot desperation shot with no time left.
Anniston (24-4) moves on to play another Huntsville team, Butler High, Friday.
