Six people are sickened in Lawrence County overnight after a mysterious substance was found along County Roads 84 and 81. Two people are in the hospital this morning for respiratory problems. The other four were told to shower and watch for additional symptoms.
Sherrif's Deputies told WAFF 48 News several packets of an unknown substance were left on the roads late last night. They say a family found one and brought it into their home for some unknown reason. The family dog ate some of the substance and died immediately.
Shortly after that, the family members began getting sick.
The Lawrence County Sheriff's Department, the county EMA, and Speake Volunteer Fire Department were all called to the scene. A Decatur Hazmat team was also there.
They set up a command post about a half mile away from the scene because they did not know what the substance was.
The Lawrence County Sherfiff says it appears whoever left the unknown substance may have been trying to kill dogs.
