Attorney General Gonzales resigns

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has announced his resignation.

Gonzales told reporters at the Justice Department that it's been one of his "greatest privileges to lead the Department of Justice." He says his resignation will take effect on September 17th.

He'd faced demands from Democrats and Republicans that he resign over the botched handling of FBI terror investigations and the firings of U.S. attorneys. But President Bush had stood by him.
