Russellville soldier returns home from tour of duty in Iraq

A Russellville soldier is happy to be home from Iraq after a year overseas.

Sergeant Jonathon Witt was reunited with his family at 3:00 Thursday afternoon.

This is his first tour, but most likely not his last.

The 23-year-old said as hot as it is here, it's even hotter where he and his platoon were stationed in Iraq.

Mom, dad, aunts and nieces were there to welcome him home at Huntsville International Airport.

Witt said he worked several different jobs while in Iraq, but mainly he helped run a post office and delivered incoming and outgoing mai.

Witt said despite a lot of negative press surrounding the war, he says morale within his platoon is high.

Witt said, " It's not a sprint, it's a marathon. We got to stick with the fight and not give up. We're making good progress over there."

Witt said the first thing he'll do now that he's home--feast on a home-cooked meal.

Friday, he hopes to get enrolled into school. He's seeking a degree in secondary education.

David: Showers and storms ongoing across the Valley

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
