Federal inmates move to DeKalb County

The first official federal inmate moved into the DeKalb County Detention Center Friday afternoon.

Douglas Adam Damiano, 37, of Buchanan, GA, has arrived. He is being held on the charge of violation of civil rights.

Sheriff Jimmy Harris stated, "We'd agreed to take 56 female inmates, but we also agreed to take male inmates if they needed us to do so.  We have been notified to expect additional inmates in the coming weeks. In anticipation of the federal inmates, we've hired additional employees, both corrections officers and transport officers, and they have all been trained. I've authorized Chief Tony Durham to make any necessary changes to policies and procedures to ensure the orderly operation of the detention facility."

Corrections officers are receiving equipment and training for special operations within the jail in the event of any emergency.  Sheriff Harris also indicated that members of the Sheriff's Office had a very productive meeting this morning with the County Commission Chairman and Administrator regarding upcoming budget issues, completion of the domes, and hiring additional personnel.

These issues will be further discussed in Tuesday's County Commission meeting.
