Police arrest the man suspected of attacking a police chief

An extensive search for a man who allegedly assaulted a local police chief ended with his arrest.

Robert T. Sykes was charged with assaulting a police officer which is a second degree felony.

The assault happened last night at around 9:00 at the Buds Gas Station on Highway 20 in the town of Town Creek.

Town Creek Police Chief Jerry Garrett was assaulted after attempting to arrest Robert Sykes.

Sykes resisted arrest and then allegedly started fighting with Chief Garrett.

He then broke away from the chief and ran into a nearby corn field.

Both Muscle Shoals Police and Florence Police K-9 officers responded along with various other local law enforcement officers.

Officers searched the area for about 3 hours.

The chief was injured in the fight.  Although he would not go on camera, he did tell us by phone nothing was broken and he will be back at work tomorrow.

Sykes was already wanted on outstanding felony warrants.
