Measuring up: Did your child's school make the grade?

Public school report cards were released today by the Alabama Department of Education.

The tests results are used to determine whether elementary, middle and high schools are meeting, or making progress toward meeting, federal standards in reading and math under the federal No Child Left Behind law.

According to State Superintendent of Education Joseph B. Morton, most Alabama schools continue to increase student performance and move towards reaching the ultimate goal of 100 percent student profieciency in its fourth year of Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) implementation.

Equally important, the state experienced a 70 percent reduction in the number of high poverty Title I schools identified as needing "school improvement".

To find out if your child's school made the grade, log onto the Alabama Department of Education's website at www.alsde.edu under "Accountability Reporting".
