Memorial service held for member of K-9 unit

A special memorial service was held Thursday morning for a former member of a Valley police department.

The service was for a retired Decatur police drug dog. It took place at the Decatur police training center.

The K-9 came from Fort Myers, Fla. and trained in Huntsville at the k-9 range. He started working with investigator Elizabeth McNeil in 1996.

The K-9 retired in 2002, but after dealing with major health problems, he was put to sleep this week.

"He was a special dog. He was good, he was a drug dog, but more than that he was a good friend. He was very protective and very aware of what was going on. He was a good dog," said McNeil

After the k-9 retired, McNeil took him in her home and took care of him.
