3 men sentenced in Selma, AL for copper theft

Three people are headed to prison after they pleaded guilty to participating in a copper theft ring.

A Dallas County judge sentenced the men to 20 years in prison.

The three were also ordered to pay almost $186,000 in restitution.

Selma's police chief says the trio was responsible for burglarizing dozens of buildings where copper was stripped, causing thousands of dollars in damages.

Police said the three stole copper to support a drug habit.

Law enforcement agencies statewide report an incredible increase in thefts from cemeteries, churches, even schools as thieves scheme to steal anything containing copper.
