Freedom writers program to benefit Heart of the Valley teachers, students

A special program is coming to Alabama and it will benefit teachers and children in the classroom.

Jesse Schmitt, a fifth-grade teacher at Monrovia Elementary School, attended a Freedom Writers workshop in California.

The Freedom Writers Foundation was founded by Erin Gruwell, who teaches other educators methods they can use in the classroom.

Schmitt will be one of 150 Freedom Writers around the world. He says the goal is to teach students they have a voice.

"The Freedom Writers are teaching students that they have a voice and that the pen is mightier than a gun or sword. Because through their voice these children are able to keep a diary to express what's going on in their lives you know just give them a voice," he said.

Schmitt will be one of two Freedom Writers in Alabama. He says he's excited about the program and the students it's going to impact.
