Stores gearing up for tax free weekend

Parents in the Shoals are gearing up for back-to-school shopping and this weekend they'll be getting a break on the cost.

Shoppers will have a weekend of tax-free back-to-school shopping and area businesses have been preparing for months.

This weekend shoppers will be cramming the stores at Regency Square Mall, trying to get their children prepared to return to school.

Only certain items will be tax free.

The biggest items this year that shoppers are expected to purchase are footwear and computers.

Clothing stores can also expect huge crowds.

Stores have been stocking up, ordering special sizes and items in preparation.

Store owner Teri Malone of Forever Glow says she appreciates the break as a retailer, but also as a mother.

"I think anytime that your able to save taxes that's a great thing. We have five children so we're always looking for a sale. But when you can save a little extra on top of the eight percent or 8 and a half percent that a really great time to take advantage of sales."

The tax-free weekend begins just at 12:01 Friday morning and ends at 12 pm Sunday.

According to our news gathering partners at the Decatur Daily, much of the  Decatur City Schools' student body will start the 2018-19 school year in a new location. The district has embarked on the largest building expansion in its history, at a cost of about $100 million.  This unprecedented move will impact nearly half of all students in the district and every student in grades 9-12, a mobilization of students that has not seen since integration in the 1960s.  Deca...More >>
