Chemical spill in DeKalb County

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management has ruled that a chemical spill resulting from a weekend wreck in DeKalb County did not have a detrimental effect on people or the environment.

An 18-wheeler tanker truck carrying chemicals ran off the road on Interstate 59 near mile marker 217 Saturday morning.

One driver and a young girl were taken to the DeKalb Regional Medical Center.

200 gallons of a chemical known as caustic soda spilled onto the roadway, forcing Hazmat clean-up crews to the scene.
