14-year old drowns at Joe Wheeler, victim's name released

A Decatur family is struggling with the loss of a 14-year old boy who drowned Wednesday afternoon.

Nester Barrueta drowned while swimming with friends and family at the Joe Wheeler Park Swim Beach in Lauderdale County.

Nester was swimming at a popular swimming spot at Swim Beach when several people noticed him bobbing in and out of the water.

Some family members and several other swimmers tried to go after the boy and couldn't find him.

It was at that time that they called for help.

Florence Dive Team, Rogersville Rescue, park officials and the Rogersville Police Department all responded to the scene.

"[When] we got to the scene, there were actually a couple of marine divers there and we put them in the water and did a hasty search was not able to locate him at the time. A time later we actually had a dive team come in and locate the body," said Tim Haney, Park Supervisor.

The family says the boy didn't know how to swim very well.

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
