A Shoals police department is adding a new traffic unit

A Shoals police department is adding a new traffic unit.

The city's first motorcycle officer is being trained in Russellville.

Florence police department is lending a hand getting the unit up and running.

They came in to teach an extensive safety course and their doing all of it free of charge.

Russellville Police Officer Scott King will be the first officer in the city on 2 wheels.

Florence police loaned the help of certified trainer and veteran motorcycle Officer Frazier Anderson along with Officer Lance Smith.

They've been in Russellville all week providing a refresher course for King.

He's already served 5 years as a motorcycle officer in Montgomery prior to coming to Russellville.

The 40-hour course focuses on bike maneuvering, tight weaving, and traffic stops.

The recent death of Florence Officer David Young is a reminder of the hazards of the job.

Certified trainer Frazier Anderson says,  "Many department haves shied away from motors  because with officers getting hurt. But with the training and everything I think we've seen we're able to reduce the number of motor officers being hurt and injured."

The training will finish up tomorrow with a final test.

Russellville Police Chief Hargett hopes to get Officer King on patrol within the next couple of weeks.

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
