Relying on sex offender registry

In July of 2006, the State of Alabama has been required to maintain a list of sex offenders via website.

The Adam Walsh Act became the law to help protect children from heinous sex offenders, but since then a backlog of information has posed serious questions.

WAFF 48's Robyn Mcglohn has more on the issue.

According to the Alabama Department of Public Safety -- they say there are 351 sex offenders in Madison County, but their website has only 187 pictured.

Some 9,000 sex offenders are registered in the State of Alabama.

There's numerous websites to check out these offenders, but what if those websites weren't up to date or gave wrong information.

According the state's website there's 187 living in Madison County but according the Madison County Sheriff's Office website there's 206.

"Eventually they're on both websites, the information on one might not be as correct as the other," says Madison County Sheriff's Office's Shawn McClure.

The Department of Public Safety who regulates the state's sex offender registry doesn't deny there is a backlog of information.

They say they only have four people entering information for the entire state.

Plus there's an increasing number of sex offenders.

They say there's a priority of who gets posted. The number one being those just released from jail; last posted are out of state offenders because they have a right to a hearing.

McClure says he has files for 300 sex offenders in the county.

He agrees where there's a small staff--the work can't get done.

"We've got 67 counties in the state of Alabama, every sheriff's office is required to report to the department of public safety, I know of two people up there that's pushing all of this paper work through."
