Academy Dance Company, a group from the magnet school, Academy for Academics and Arts will be performing in Dance for a Cause on May 22nd at 5:30 at Lowe Mill. This company is made up of 7th and 8th graders who wish to learn about and perform movement from all genres of dance. The purpose of this company is to fully involve the students with the creation of dance as an art form. This year the dancers have been inspired to begin a service learning project to benefit children suffering from AIDS at a Aim for Restoration of Hope, an orphanage in Uganda. Bono, a rock star that uses his celebrity to push for charity causes in Africa, first inspired Academy Dance Company's director, Cathy Curry, to begin learning about the African AIDS epidemic with her company. After seeing Bono and Alecia Keys perform the emotional duet, Don't Give Up, Ms. Curry began working with her dancers to choreograph a dance that focuses on the suffering of AIDS victims and finds hope for their relief. The students felt so strongly about the subject matter that they continued their research, delving into some very serious facts. The enormity of the situation moved the dancers to create this performance, Dance for a Cause with help from Ms. Curry and their gifted teacher, Cherice Maddox. The dancers have included other artists in the community such as Dance Theatre of Huntsville and drummers from SABA School of Dance. There will be a wide assortment of musicians, singers and dancers, all performing to raise money for Aim for Restoration of Hope, the orphanage that the students have been communicating with in Uganda. The proceeds of this show will pay for anti-retroviral drugs, education, clothing and nourishment for these children whose lives have so been affected by AIDS. Tina's Cantina, a local restaurant located at the Lowe Mill, will be catering the event along with a student-cooking group from Academy for Academics and Arts. Tina Rochester, the owner, has generously donated her time to working with the Academy's students in creating this show. Tickets for Dance for a Cause are available at Shaver's books, Tina's Cantina and Academy for Academics and Arts With dinner reservations included, they will be $15.00 and are available with a vegetarian option. Without the dinner reservation, tickets are available at the door for $5.00. The show will be performed at Lowe Mill on 2211 Seminole Drive.
