Elderly couple robbed and beaten during home invasion

An elderly couple was robbed and beaten during a home invasion.

It happened Friday morning around 3:30 at a home on Carlin Street in Albertville.

Police say two armed men wearing ski masks barged in a door, and not only robbed an elderly couple, but they "Took approximately $8,000 in cash and several dollars worth of antique coins," Albertville Police Sgt. Jamie Smith said.

The suspects also beat them.

79-year-old C.W. Spurlin, a grandfather, was brutally assaulted and had to be rushed to the hospital.

Family members tell us some of his ribs were broken during the attack.

His wife, 81-year-old Helen Spurlin was also roughed up. Her injuries were not nearly as severe.

The Spurlin's neighbors are shaken by the attack.

They say it couldn't have happened to two nicer people.

"I was very shocked. You just don't hear about stuff like that happening really in Albertville at all, let alone on a quiet street like this where you pretty much know everybody," neighbor Aimee Grey said.

Police believe the Spurlin's could've been targeted because of their age.

The incident is still under investigation.

Police do expect to make an arrest soon.

At last check, C.W. Spurlin was at Marshall Medical Center South in stable condition.
