Investigators hope to speak with a seriously injured school bus driver who was ejected on an interstate overpass before the vehicle crashed 30 feet below, killing three high school students and injuring about two dozen more.
Debbie Hersman, a spokeswoman for the National Transportation Safety Board, said that the bus driver was not at the wheel when it smashed nose-first on Church Street below the I-565 overpass.
The unnamed driver remains at Huntsville Hospital serious condition.
Police said the bus veered off the road and plowed through the concrete overpass railing after an orange car came up on its side, possibly striking the bus.
Huntsville Police Chief Rex Reynolds said the car's driver and a passenger went to a hospital following the crash, but he was not aware if they were treated for injuries. He said the driver was interviewed by police.
