Hazel Green High School principal resigns

Hazel Green High School principal resigns

HAZEL GREEN, AL (WAFF) - Darrell Long, who has served as the principal of Hazel Green High School since 2009, has resigned.

The announcement comes one week after classes started for the 2018-19 school year.

A special session of the Madison County board of education was held on Wednesday night to accept the resignation.

Madison County Schools Superintendent Matt Massey emailed the following statement to parents Thursday morning:

To the Hazel Green Community,
Hazel Green High School Principal, Darrell Long, resigned yesterday from his position at the school for personal and family reasons. The search for the next principal is already in progress. I have confidence in the teachers and staff at Hazel Green High, and I look forward to a great school year for the Trojan Nation.

Long was an assistant principal at Ardmore High School for six years before taking the same position at Hazel Green for one year in 2008.

A 2017 report made available by the State Department Of Education shows that Hazel Green High School had a graduation rate of 94.98 percent.

Many people in Hazel Green were shocked over Long's resignation. Some think there may be more to the situation.

"I just know it's a great school and I feel that they'll have it under control and find somebody for the job," said Angela Quick.

Quick's son just started his senior year at Hazel Green High School.

"It makes me wonder what's going on, you know. Why is the basketball coach resigning? And now the principal. Who's next?" said Sheryl Clark.

Massey met with faculty members this morning to discuss Long's resignation.

The next school board meeting is on Aug. 23.
