SCOTT COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Scott County woman has died after she was arrested earlier this week near Morton.

Sheriff Mike Lee says his deputies responded to a mobile home on Morton-Rankin County Line Road Tuesday night after someone at the home reported a disturbance. When they arrived, deputies arrested Miranda Brooke Musgrove, who the sheriff says was causing the disturbance and was being combative. Lee says she was having trouble answering their questions, so they called an ambulance. Lee says Musgrove refused medical treatment.

Deputies called Musgrove’s mother to come take her young child. While they waited for the mother to arrive, Lee says Musgrove was in the back of a deputy’s cruiser for about 45 minutes. Once the child’s grandmother arrived, they took Musgrove to jail.

Lee says Musgrove became less and less combative and somewhat lethargic as they drove, so they called an ambulance again to meet them at the sheriff's department. The ambulance took her to a hospital, where Lee says she later died.

The sheriff says it appears his deputies acted appropriately. He says there is body-camera video of the entire incident, and he has turned it over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.

He is awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine what caused Musgrove's death. Lee said there was evidence of substance abuse at the home.
