Breakdown: How the air you breathe can become dangerous

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

In the summer months, air quality alerts get issued more than any other time of the year. The bad air quality is caused by increased pollutants, which in turn increase our ozone levels. The air quality index is used to measure the levels of ozone in the air.

On a code orange day, the air quality index reaches levels that can be dangerous for some groups. However, code red or purple air quality alerts means that it is dangerous for everyone to breathe the air.

The high ozone levels are caused by ground level ozone and particulates from car exhaust and factory pollutants. Without wind and rain, these pollutants can build over an area and cause difficulty breathing.
