ATHENS, AL (WAFF) - An Athens man has been arrested after an incident in a church on Sunday.
Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely says Thomas Zebulun Lewter, 34, has been charged with making a terrorist threat after he attempted to pull a gun from its holster while he was speaking at the pulpit during service at O'Neal Church of Christ.
Lewter was reportedly detained by congregation members after he approached the pulpit and began speaking about his pending divorce, calling out his wife and father-in-law, who were present at the service.
Congregation members tried to convince Lewter to stop talking and sit down, but he refused and attempted to grab a handgun. He was then tackled by those nearby.
A retired deputy who was present assisted and handcuffed Lewter.
Lewter was admitted to Athens-Limestone Hospital for evaluation and has since been booked into the Limestone County Jail.
Church leaders told WAFF that they were praying for everyone involved in the incident, but declined to be interviewed. We also spoke with people who live near the church, who said they were shaken by the news and were concerned for the safety of their children.
We will continue to update this story with more information as we receive it.
