TUSCUMBIA, AL (WAFF) -

Lightning is a common weather event for Alabamians. Our state averages more lightning strikes than many other states.

Lightning killed three people in Alabama in 2017. Lightning can strike as far away as 10 miles from a storm. Many people believe because you are in your home you are safe.

Just this week, Tuscumbia resident Brandon Staggs got video he captured on his home surveillance. Bolts of lightning jolted through his home and damaged his electrical systems. He said thankfully he wasn't home when it happened.

"Well, the thing I noticed, my lights didn't work, TV, and my computer router. All sockets were blown out," said Staggs.

EMA drector George Grabryan said if lightning hits your home when you're inside you should seek medical attention.
