This year we’ve seen countless well-known people share stories about their struggles with mental health. Olympic Swimmer Michael Phelps, actor Dwayne Johnson, and singer Mariah Carey have discussed periods in their life when they suffered from depression. Often, depression leads to drastic outcomes. It’s hard sometimes to imagine what would lead someone to take their own life, but it happens daily. The Centers for Disease Control says the suicide rate has increased significantly since 1999. It’s very important to pay attention to family and friends who may be struggling with depression or anxiety. It’s not always easy, but it’s important – possibly lifesaving – to have a conversation about suicide and let them know you’re there to help in challenging times. You can encourage them to contact the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK, that’s 1-800-273-8255.Evidence shows that providing support services, talking about suicide, reducing access to means of self-harm, and following up with loved ones are just some of the actions we can all take to help others.
