HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Upgrades continue at Redstone Arsenal's busiest gate and the Gate 9 widening project will soon enter a new phase.
If you're leaving Redstone Arsenal out of Gate 9, headed north to the I-565 interchange, start watching for upcoming lane closures.
"On July 9, we're going to start shutting down parts of the lanes on the outbound, northbound Rideout Road in order to do maintenance on the intersection. We are going to shutdown outbound lanes at different times throughout the day. We will not, however, shut down the outbound lanes from 3:30-5:30pm because that's our peak traffic time going out," explained Chris Colster, with Garrison public affairs.
Also, southbound drivers approaching Gate 9 will see new traffic lights.
"We've installed new lights at Rideout Road and Gateway Road, the intersection there. We're going to have those flashing yellow at this time just to socialize everyone that there's lights there. They will go active after a certain amount of time. They will cut off some of the traffic coming into Gate 9 so they can take another right turn there, reducing some of the wait time at Gate 9 as well," Colster said.
It's all part of an expansive project to make enhancements to Gate 9, geared at improving traffic flow in and out of the main gate.
Gate 9 is the installation's busiest gate and sees half of the workforce travel its lanes every day. A seventh and eighth lane for inbound traffic are being added.
"Our goal is to get traffic flow into and out of Gate 9 in a more efficient and safe manner. As usual, we ask everyone to be cautious, slow down, obey the traffic signals and the personnel and be safe," Colster added.
