COLBERT COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - An aggressive dog attack that sent one woman to the hospital is still under investigation in Florence. WAFF 48 News did some digging to find out what you should know if a dog attacks.
Colbert County animal control officer Anthony Wilbanks said it's important not to run from an aggressive dog. He said that shows intimidation, which could provoke an attack.
"The best thing you can do is stay very still, stay calm, and try not to make eye contact with the dog," said Wilbanks.
Wilbanks said ignore the dog and be still for a period of time and try to get to a safe place where there is a barrier between you and the dog.
He said if a dog is aggressively attacking you then you have to fight back. Don't be afraid to spray mace or a chemical in the dog's eyes because it won't permanently hurt the animal.
"If you do get a puncture wound go to the hospital or your local doctor to ensure you have no infection," said Wilbanks.
Wilbanks wants to remind people it's important to never run from an animal.
