National Guardsman gets married fresh off plane at Huntsville International Airport

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A National Guardsman and his fiancee wasted no time Tuesday afternoon, getting married within minutes of his return to American soil.

A chaplain married Staff Sgt. Heath Cross and Jamie Cross, formerly Jamie Dodson, about 50 yards from the airstrip at the Huntsville International Airport.

"We had talked about getting married for a long time, before he left," Jamie said. However, Heath's deployment schedule didn't cooperate. It was the third time the couple planned their wedding.

"We just didn't want to wait anymore," she said. Heath served nine months on his third deployment to the Middle East and said he is blessed.

"I got to marry my best friend and the most amazing woman in the world," said Heath. The couple met three years ago through mutual friends.

Heath said the two plan to build a house in Hatton, where they own land. "That's probably where we're going to be for the rest of our lives," he said.

Family and friends celebrated with the new couple as members of the 115th ESB National Guard looked on.

Heath's mother, Connie Keen, drove three hours from Tennessee to see her son return home and get married on the same day.

"I tell him every time he goes, I age 10 years. It's just thrilling to have him back home, and to get another daughter in the process," she said. "I'm just so happy for him."
