HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - An accident on Interstate 565 left a motorcyclist injured Saturday and caused major backups.
According to Huntsville police, the driver of a van was going the wrong way on the interstate, plowing into oncoming traffic.
He was going west in eastbound lanes around the Highway 72 area and before officers could stop the van, he collided with a motorcycle around Jordan Lane.
As crews worked to get the scene cleared, that portion of the eastbound lanes was closed for several hours. Traffic was diverted onto Jordan Lane.
"Impaired driving was a factor in this crash. The only injury is to the motorcyclist and at this time does not appear to be life threatening," said HPD's public information officer, Lt. Michael Johnson, in a statement released to media outlets Saturday night.
After 10 p.m., the eastbound lanes reopened.
DUI Task Force members are investigating the crash and will be following up with the driver of the van, Lt. Johnson said.
He was detained and could face criminal charges.
