HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

School is out, and many of you are getting ready to spend some quality family time at the pool.

But are you using the right floaties for those not so strong swimmers?

You should use a life jacket if your child doesn't know how to swim.

Kimberly Putman, a safety trainer for the city of Huntsville said the main danger lies in the fact that arm floats can easily deflate or slip off, leaving your child in a very dangerous situation.

If your child doesn't know how to swim, it could lead your child to struggle while in the water, or worse even go under.

"If they slip off, then the child is in immediate danger. If you use a coast guard jacket that is fitted well for the right weight, then the security of the child doubles," said Kimberly Putman, Huntsville Safety Trainer.

Putman also says the sooner you can get your child into swim lessons the better.
