Lauderdale County sheriff discuses recent jail escapes

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton said his jail is outdated and that it is part of the reason for at least four inmate escapes in the last four years.

A Lauderdale inmate escaped and was captured in the span of a few hours on Monday. Rodrecous Rogers managed to run out the door before he was even booked into jail.

Singleton said the escape happened while two other inmates were being released on bond. Rodgers caught the deputy while his head was turned, and slipped out the door.

"That was primarily due to a design flaw of the facility. We thought we had it fixed. Now they found another way to circumvent the locks and there is not much we can do about that, but we did change some of our procedures far as keeping an eye on that," said Singleton.

Singleton said because the facility was not designed properly, there are still chances inmates can get out. However, when these issues happen, they work to fix the problem to prevent it from happening again.
